Galloways and Dengemarsh Foreshore
Sunday 19 February 2024
Our 50th
It's always difficult when you wake up on the morning of a litter-picking event, look out the window and the weather is rubbish. With the cut off time being 8 am for cancelling, and a quick exchange of messages with Paul, the decision was made, let's go for it! With the forecast showing an improvement from 9 am onwards.
We had cancelled the previous MOD beach clean (due to storms); this was our first visit of 2024 and the group's 50th visit since 2019!
With the rain easing (thankfully) 8 volunteers headed for Galloways Beach in shared vehicles. On arriving we spread out across the shingle, the rain had stopped the wind dropped and the sun broke through the clouds, right decision made.
Our 50th visit yielded a total bag count of 33 bags.
Back to The Rype for our treat of hot drinks and delicious cakes, with thanks to Liz & Sue.
Thank you to David for bringing the trailer.
Marco Packaging of Ivychurch for their support.
Photos tell the story with thanks to: David, Paul, Chris & Wendy.
Our 51st visit will be on the 10 March 2024

Sunday 17th December MOD Lydd Ranges (Galloways Foreshore).
Our festive litter pick and our last visit to the Lydd Ranges as a group for 2023.
On this occasion 15 volunteers gathered on The Rype on a bright sunny but cold & breezy day, thankfully no rain. Once all registered we made our way by shared vehicles to the Galloway's Beach.
The bags filled today totalled 24 + the usual mixture of marine debris.
Back to the Rype where Liz & Sue had a festive end to the event for everyone, with warming mulled wine, pipping hot tea or coffee, drinking chocolate, chocolate cake, home-baked wonky mince pies (they were back), cheese sticks and shortbread! Thank you, Liz & Sue. Delicious.
THIS WAS OUR 49th VISIT!
Having obtained the relevant permissions LPWRM visited the ranges for the first visit in January 2019, this has continued almost every month (sometimes twice) to the present day and is ongoing. To date *1746 volunteer (group) hours have been given by members of LPWRM, working towards keeping this unique shingle beach clear of damaging litter & marine pollution. We have removed 2793 bags of rubbish from this foreshore and larger items such as plastic containers, pallets, fishing nets and other debris (not included in our bag count). All stacked and placed in prearranged picking-up points with the Lydd Camp Guardroom which MOD contractors then remove. In recognition of LPWRM contributions to sustainability and conservation on this defence estate. Sanctuary MOD Sustainability Magazine awarded us: Highly Commended In the Social Value Award presented to us by Baroness Goldie DL Defence Minister of State.
THANK YOU!
For you all for today, you know who you are and to all volunteers over the past 4 years.
David for organising and bringing the trailer.
Macro Packaging of Ivychurch for their support.
Photos tell the story thanks to: Wendy, Rita, John, Paul, Chris & David.
Our next public picking event is 30th December 2023 at Greatstone.
